SUMMARY:Tyrwhitt Hall - Guided Tours - Heritage Open Days
DESCRIPTION:Historian Keith Miller guides these one-and-a-half hour tours of the Great Hall and grounds at Tyrwhitt Hall. Originally a manor house on a site dating back to Saxon times\, the hall is named after the Tyrwhitt baronets who lived here in the 16th century. The present house dates back to at least the 15th century\, with additions and alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries and renovations to house and garden undertaken by the present owner in the 1980s. Sculptor\, singer and choirmaster Philip Pape lived and worked here from 1960 to 1982 and is commemorated by a blue plaque outside. \nFree \nBooking essential\, tickets available from The Ropewalk \n11am\, 2pm and 4.30pm \n

SUMMARY:Barton Civic Society Guided Walk\, Barton’s Brick Barons - Heritage Open Days
DESCRIPTION:In the Victorian heyday of the industry there were 15 different brick and tile works in Barton alone\, as well as several others in South Ferriby\, Barrow and New Holland. Unlike some of the neighbouring parishes\, however\, most of the Barton works were owned by local businessmen\, many of whom built impressive houses for their own occupation around the town to show off their wares. This walk will give a brief outline of the industry\, as well as looking at several of these homes\, finishing up on Westfield Road\, from where the sites of several of these yards can be seen. This walk is expected to take around 75 minutes. \nMeet at junction of Maltkiln Lane and Waterside Road. \nFree \n
