SUMMARY:Julie Oxenforth's Totemic exhibition at The Ropewalk
DESCRIPTION:Julie  recycles found objects\, images and various materials to produce curious phenomena and new narratives. Trusting the process she focuses on the dynamics of form and space\, colour\, line and movement. Julie graduated from Sunderland University in 2005 with a distinction in MA Fine Art. Here\, her tutor described her as a Swiss roll; by osmosis her experiences\, environment and multiple interests are rolled up into one whole installation or body of work. With a neuro-divergent mind leaping about in different directions\, she is constantly seeking connections flowing through seemingly disparate thoughts and themes. Some of the objects she has collected were found in Egypt\, a place where she lived\, worked and exhibited for 7 years. Others are from house clearance of the parental home\, loaded with significance\, memory and loss. \nShe has exhibited in numerous groups shows\, and created solo installations in gallery and off-site spaces\, often in deprived areas\, in the UK and Egypt. She was a member of an artist collective Caravan in Egypt for several consecutive years\, resulting in her artwork being sited at The British Council in Cairo. This exhibition serves as a culmination of the last 5 years spent as a Ropewalk studio artist. \n

SUMMARY:John Etheridge with special guest Kit Holmes at Ropery Hall
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an uplifting evening of: blues\, folk\, jazz\, African grooves and much more from two outstanding guitarists. John Etheridge is one of the world’s most respected guitarists and with over 50 years of live performance and recordings it is no exaggeration to say that his music spans a myriad of styles from Gypsy jazz to acid-rock and everything in-between! \nHe is still a member of the legendary Soft Machine and has collaborated with the violin legends Stephane Grappelli and Nigel Kennedy. He is currently in a duo with the eminent classical guitarist John Williams. Tonight’s solo performance will be a chance to experience an intimate evening with John\, who is not only an excellent raconteur\, but arguably\, as Pat Metheny once said: ‘One of the best guitarists’‘ \nSpecial guest Kit Holmes’ trademark sultry vocals and virtuoso guitar playing have wowed UK audiences with performances including: Paul McCartney’s LIPA\, the Anne Frank Awards\, a performance for Bill Bryson and Andy Kershaw and a headline show at the International Guitar Festival of Great Britain. Bob Harris and Andy Kershaw featured her on their BBC shows and Kit’s third album\, Driving into the Blue\, which features the legendary double bass player Danny Thompson\, was met with high critical acclaim. Expect an enthralling and energetic live performance of blues-driven roots with a soul sensibility. \n
